A Park Rapids-area cattle farmer is asking for the public’s help after he says someone stole his entire herd in broad daylight. Rob Kelm says he arrived at the pasture he rents near Park Rapids earlier this month and found it empty. He told authorities he later learned that someone had driven in during the day, loaded up all 11 of his cows and left within about two hours. Kelm reported the theft to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating. He says deputies took photos of tire tracks at the scene and collected images of grain believed to have been used to lure the cattle. There is a camera on the property, but Kelm says it was not working at the time of the theft. Kelm, who has worked with cattle his entire life, says he’s been overwhelmed by support from the community. Neighbors and others have been sending him photos of cows they think might be his, and local sales barns are on alert for any suspicious lots. In Minnesota, cattle theft is a felony. Depending on the value and number of animals taken, sentences can range from 90 days in jail to up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000.
