Two men escaped without injury after the floatplane they were in attempted to land on Lake Bemidji, causing it to flip and submerge. Emergency dispatchers received several 911 calls around 4:15 p.m. reporting that a floatplane had flipped while attempting to land on the lake, said Christopher Muller, Beltrami County’s emergency management director and public information officer. The plane came to rest south of the Bemidji Town and Country Club and began sinking upside down. Both men got out of the plane on their own. Before deputies arrived, boaters on the lake were already helping. They pulled up to the overturned plane, helped the men out of the water, and stuck around long enough to confirm no one else was on board. The plane never fully sank; its pontoons kept it floating upside down until boats towed it to shore. Paramedics checked out both men at the scene. Neither wanted to go to the hospital. Investigators found the landing gear down and exposed when they arrived, though it’s too early to say what caused the crash, Muller said. The FAA and NTSB have been notified and are investigating.
