A 20-year-old Bemidji man has been formally charged after police say he shot another man and illegally had a gun during a late-night incident at a housing complex. According to a Beltrami County criminal complaint, Terrance Lee Jones Jr. is charged with felony felon in possession of a firearm and felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Police were called around 10:39 p.m. Sunday, July 19 to the City Express by Marriott hotel, where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. The victim told police he was shot while walking near the Kestrel Pines apartments but didn’t see who fired. Documents say officers went to Kestrel Pines, found three shell casings and spoke with relatives, who identified “T.J.” — later confirmed as Jones — as the suspected shooter. Jones told detectives three men, including the victim approached his unit in black clothing and that one pointed a pistol at him. He said he fired two shots in fear for his family, then gave his handgun to another man who left, the complaint says. A search of his home did not turn up a gun. According to documents, surveillance video from the hotel showed the victim running and throwing something onto the roof, where officers later found a .22-caliber revolver with four spent and five live rounds. The complaint says Jones cannot have a gun because of a 2025 attempted second-degree assault conviction involving a firearm. A judge found probable cause and ordered Jones held in jail. The complaint does not list the victim’s current condition.
